Piet Oudolf Wisley border

  • Position: Full sun
  • Soil: Moderately-fertile, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: Average to fast
  • Hardiness: Frost hardy to fully hardy

Much admired at the RHS Garden Wisley, this border will create a colourful, summer-long display. These beautiful perennials will all thrive side by side in a sunny bed with moist but well-drained soil. The 12 plants will cover an area measuring approximately 1 x 1.5m.

Each Piet Oudoulf border collection contains one of each of the following plants, all supplied in 9cm nursery pots.

  • Echinacea purpurea 'Rubinglow': From midsummer, glowing magenta-pink ray-florets form around the large, rust-coloured cone, forming long-lasting flowerheads, which remain interesting well into autumn. The flowers are very attractive to wildlife. Grows to 70cm.

  • Saponaria × lempergii 'Max Frei': Throughout summer, soft pink flowers smother the low-growing mounds of evergreen foliage. Sun-loving and drought tolerant once established, it looks wonderful tumbling over the edge of a raised bed or rock garden. Grows to 40cm.

  • Eryngium giganteum 'Silver Ghost': A prickly perennial forming a basal rosette of foliage from which branching leafy stems bear cylindrical flowerheads, that are surrounded by a ruff of prominent, silvery white bracts. The flowerheads can be added to fresh and dried arrangements. Grows to 60cm.

  • Phlox paniculata 'Blue Paradise': Trusses of fragrant, lilac-coloured flowers form on top of the upright, leafy stems from midsummer, attracting many beneficial insects. Very effective when teamed up with rich plums, purples and silver. Grows to 90cm.

    Planting tips:
Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant. For best results it is essential that the plants are kept well watered for the first year, particularly during warmer weather.
