Plant bare-root roses (and hedging)

It is still possible to buy roses and hedging plants as bare roots specimens. These should be planted straight away provide the weather and soil conditions allow. The plants should be completely dormant, with moist, healthy looking roots and no signs of shrivelled or split stems. Before planting, prune out any damaged stems and trim damaged roots. Also remove crossing or weak shoots. Dig a large hole and incorporated well-rotted organic matter into the bottom, creating a dome-shaped bottom to the hole. Position the rose in the hole and spread out the roots and check the depth of the hole by laying a cane across the hole – the graft union should be below the surface. Gradually fill the hole in layers, shaking the rose slightly to get soil between the roots and firm. Top up the hole and firm again. Water well and mulch, taking care not to pile mulch against the stem.
