Hardy annuals, such as clarkia, godetia and poppies, should be sown now either in prepared seedbed outside or in trays in a coldframe. If sowing in trays, sow thinly and prick out into pots filled with multi-purpose compost as soon as they are large enough to handle safely. Overwinter as sturdy seedlings in the coldframe and than plant out next spring. Plants sown in a seedbed may need protection during the coldest months by covering with cloches or a double layer of garden fleece. Transplant them to their flowering positions in late spring.
