25 x Iris 'Alida': Relatively hard to find, this striking mid-blue iris has sunny splashes of yellow on each fall. Gardening 'Which' Magazine carried out a trial on this plant and recommended it to their readers, as it is a strong grower with intensely coloured flowers. Plant in clusters at the front of the border, or pot it up and keep it on the patio. Grows to 15cm.

50 x Iris 'Pauline': Providing a bright splash of colour in late winter and early spring, often when there is little else in bloom, these low-growing iris are valuable additions to pots, windowboxes, alpine beds and rockeries. They will also look very sweet when popping up at the front of a sunny border. Grows to 15cm.

  • Garden care: Plant bulbs 5cm deep and 5-10cm apart in the autumn, using a good quality bulb compost mixed with grit to improve the drainage. Plant into the handsome pot provided and place in a sunny spot. Water moderately while they are actively growing and keep reasonably dry during their dormant period. The plants can be divided and transplanted to the garden, into well-drained soil, during the summer if the bulbs become congested.
